psychotherapy for individuals + couples

supporting your well-being

Adele House, MA, MFT
Welcome to my website.
After a lengthy and fulfilling career in the theatre as a production stage manager, I received my bachelor’s degree in nutrition sciences from California State University, Los Angeles. I accomplished my goal of becoming a registered dietitian (RD) by gaining practicum experience at Kaiser Permanente, AIDS Project Los Angeles and Project Angel Food, where I worked as the staff dietitian, counseling men, women and children affected by HIV/AIDS.
Later I obtained a Master’s Degree in Psychology from Phillips Graduate Institute and have been a licensed marriage and family therapist (MFC 46858) for 20 years.
By combining Cognitive, Postmodern and Gestalt therapies (what I call Awareness Therapy), I have incorporated my experience in nutrition counseling with my existential psychotherapy practice, thereby working holistically to integrate mind, body and spirit.

My Practice
I treat individuals, couples, and work partners in private practice. I specialize in issues unique to entertainment, especially writers and artists, and in concerns specific to the gay and lesbian community. My research on whether intimacy levels play a significant role in the sexual frequency among couples was published in the professional journal, PROGRESS: Family Systems Research and Therapy.
The populations I serve, and my specialization sweet spots, are:
Writers & Artists
Showrunner/EP Support
Relationship Difficulties
GLBTQIA+
Coming Out
Self-Esteem
Sex & Sexuality Depression
Anxiety
HIV/AIDS
CoDep/Al-Anon
12-Step Support

How I Work
I view each client – not myself – as the expert on his or her or their life. My role is that of an avid listener and ally, guiding clients toward discoveries about their own experiences and the origins of their individual beliefs. We work in partnership and hope that by shared effort we can discover ways of meeting their respective goals. I value the therapeutic relationship and strive to establish a collaborative environment, free of labels, blame, and shame, wherein boundaries are respected and clients are ultimately empowered to change.
I am constantly mindful of the effects that society, culture, family, politics, and gender have on us and, by incorporating my personal beliefs with postmodern concepts, I have had the opportunity to integrate myself – the parts that are socially, politically and culturally aware – into my identity as a therapist. Existential theories, like Gestalt, resonate with me because I believe in personal responsibility, accountability and that we are free to choose. I have a deep philosophical belief that we can create our own realities by increased awareness of the thoughts we think, the feelings we feel, and the choices we make.

Consulting + Media
I am available to consult with practicing clinicians by appointment, as well as a media consultant for relationship and therapy expertise.
I served weekly as the resident therapist and relationship expert on the nationally syndicated radio show Women Aloud with Mo Gaffney and Shana Wride, where we discussed a wide range of mental health and relationship issues.
I am currently the in-house therapist for the podcast “I Choose Me with Jennie Garth” on iHeart Radio.
I am no longer seeing clients in private practice, please feel free to email me for a referral, or for a consultation or media requests at ahousemft at gmail dot com.
